Cities

A new report, The Impact of Ranked Choice Voting on Representation, explores how election systems affect the election of women and people of color in California by comparing election outcomes in the four Bay Area cities that use ranked choice voting (RCV) with California cities that do not use RCV. The results of this case-study analysis indicate that ranked choice voting helps to elect historically under-represented constituencies. This may be because campaigns cost less, are more positive, create incentives for grassroots outreach, and give more voters more choice.

PAC and Donor Spending

With the support of a Network Grant from the Democracy Fund, Representation20/20 has teamed up with the Center for Responsive Politics and Common Cause Education Fund to research PAC and donor giving to male and female candidates and to devise strategies to challenge them to set targets for the percentage - or overall amount  - that they give to women candidates.

The full report can be found here.

This collaborative project includes:

  • data analysis of PAC and donor contributions
  • qualitative interviews with PAC leadership
  • outreach to individual donors
  • consultation with a politically diverse group of experts

Women's Caucuses

Representation20/20 is building relationships with state legislative women’s caucuses to:

  • learn about best practices
  • strategize about opportunities for reform
  • implement systemic solutions to the under-representation of women

Approximately 20 states have either partisan or bipartisan caucuses which promote legislation that will improve the status of women in their state. They also serve as important networking channels for female legislators and as vehicles for reform that make legislative bodies more women-friendly and representative.

Evolving Democracy

Representation20/20 is working with It's Time Network and a team of women to write a People’s Guide for Evolving Democracy that will be the first comprehensive inventory of the issues and organizations working on reforming American democracy to make it more inclusive and representative. The People’s Guide to Evolving Democracy follows the well-received Mayors Guide: Accelerating Gender Equality that was released in 2016.
